The Canon Pellix was Canon’s first 35mm SLR camera with TTL metering. A super-thin, semi-transparent film only 20/1000 mm thick was used as a fixed mirror. Since there was no mirror blackout, the user could see the image at the moment of exposure.

A stopped-down, TTL exposure meter used 12% spot metering at the viewfinder center. It was hailed for its accuracy and reliability.

The fixed pellicle mirror reduced the amount of light reaching the film by half. However, since the image could be viewed through the viewfinder even during long exposures, it was a popular camera.

Noise

The operating noise from the Canon Pellix is surprisingly similar to that of the Canon FX using a moving reflex mirror. Canon made two fast lenses, the FL 50mm 1:1.4 and the FL 58mm 1:1.2, in order to compensate for the light loss, but fast lenses might increase the risk of the sun burning holes in the shutter curtain not being protected by a solid mirror; a fact anticipated and solved by providing the Canon Pellix with a metal shutter curtain.

Issue with light

Another obstacle is the risk of light finding its way into the camera by way of the finder window during exposure, since there is no mirror to block the path in its up-position. This was also anticipated, and a finder blind is provided which is operated by turning the ring under the rewind knob, especially useful when leaving the camera on a stand. The Meter circuit is susceptible to breakage due to the CdS meter arm being moved into position behind the pellicle mirror during exposure reading. A special lens was made available for the Canon Pellix, the FLP 38mm 1:2.8, utilising the fact the camera has a stationary mirror that will not hit the lens’ rear element. The FLP code indicates that this lens is exclusively to be used on the Canon Pellix camera.

The Canon FP was a Canon FX without the built-in exposure meter. For pro users who did not want or need the exposure meter. An external CdS exposure meter having the same specs as the Canon FX built-in meter was offered as an option.

At the time of release, many photographers preferred using a handheld meter, and others preferred the lower pricing. However, the Canon FP was not popular making it more rare and desirable for collectors.

The shutter is a horizontally traveling focal plane shutter supporting speeds between 1/1000 and 1 second in full stop increments, selected by a dial on the top plate on the photographer’s right. The X-sync speed for flash is 1/55 sec.; flash support was through a PC socket on the front of the body.

The viewfinder on the Canon FP uses a glass pentaprism and gives coverage of 90% of the frame vertically and 93% horizontally, with a 0.9× magnification (with a 50 mm standard lens).

The Canon FP was available with either silver or black metal parts.

After the CanonFlex RM, the Canon FX was the first in a new series having an aperture linkage on a new lens mount.

The model designation’s “flex” (for single-lens reflex) suffix was replaced with an “F.”

The new aperture linkage was designed to reduce the film advance torque and to integrate TTL light metering. After the shutter was released, the lens reverted to the maximum aperture regardless of the film advance state.

The built-in CdS exposure meter indicated the proper aperture for the selected shutter speed. A lever switched between the high (EV9 to 18) and low (EV1 to 10) metering sensitivity ranges.

The Canon FX was available with either silver or black metal parts.

There were only two known all-black models until November 2014; There are now at least three, two are owned by a private collector in Indiana, USA and another one by a private collector in Koromilia, Kilkis, Greece.

Although this camera belongs to the CanonFlex series, it was developed as an entirely different model to the CanonFlex.

It used the same body shell as the Canonflex, the pentaprism was set very low, giving the body a unique shape. The top cover looked high, and the film advance lever fitted stylishly into a slot on the top cover. Coupled to the large shutter speed dial was the built-in selenium exposure meter which indicated the proper aperture.

Deluxe version of the Canonflex. With a top shutter speed of 1/2000 sec, the fastest ever for any camera, the CanonFlex R2000 was a high-performance 35mm SLR. Other than that, it was the same as the original Canonflex. The viewfinder used a Fresnel matte focusing screen without a rangefinder.

This was Canon’s first camera aimed at professional photographers.

To cut costs, the CanonFlex RP had a fixed, eye-level pentaprism viewfinder. This was the economy or “Populaire” version of the Canonflex.

The self-timer was operated by a simple lever, and the pentaprism cover was part of the single-piece top cover. Other features and performance were the same as the original Canonflex.

The Canonflex 35mm SLR camera was launched in May 1959 by the Canon Camera Co., Tokyo, Japan. It is the first SLR camera from this, at the time, well known rangefinder camera manufacturer.

The Canonflex used a high-quality, breechlock lens mount. The lens flange ring was turned to lock the lens onto the camera flange’s bayonet lugs. The lens flange and camera flange did not rub against each other like today’s lens mounts.The camera used Super-Canomatic lenses which had a fast, fully-automatic diaphragm. A 130-degree winding trigger at the camera bottom enabled quick film advance. An external selenium exposure meter could also be attached.

The Canonflex has a cloth shutter-curtain unlike the contemporary rangefinder Canons, metal was considered unnecessary being protected by the mirror from sun burning it. The back is opened by a key at the base, turning it fully snaps open the door. The attention to details is apparent in these and other features, like the self-timer with a fold-out key and the nine-piece rewind lever. Under it is a eminently well designed film reminder, consisting of two scales for film speed and type.

The EX Auto is a 35 mm SLR camera made by Canon in 1972. Its most characteristic feature is a rear lens-group fixed on the camera, to which any of a small selection of front groups can be attached (by a simple screw fitting).

The available lens front-groups are:

• Standard lens: EX 50 mm f/1.8
• Wide angle: EX 35 mm f/3.5
• Portrait: EX 95 mm f/3.5
• Telephoto: EX 125 mm f/3.5

The lens focusing ring was also coupled to autoflash metering. With the dedicated Speedlite D mounted on the hot shoe and the EX 50mm f/1.8 lens attached to the camera, the CAT System automatically obtained the correct flash exposure for the subject distance. Taking pictures at night became as easy as taking pictures during the day.

The EXEE is a 35 mm SLR camera made by Canon from 1969 until the early 1970’s. It was replaced by the Canon EX Auto in 1972.

This camera had unusual features such as shutter speed-priority AE, maximum-aperture TTL metering and AE, a bright aerial image viewfinder, and focal-plane shutter. The front lens element was also interchangeable.

The CdS meter reads between EV 4.75 and EV 17. It requires a 1.3V mercury battery or modern substitute. However, the shutter speeds are timed mechanically, so the camera functions without a battery (without metering).

Overall, the Canon EXEE was a well-regarded camera for its time, offering many advanced features and a high level of build quality. While it may not be as popular or widely used today as some other cameras from the same era, it was definitely considered to be a good camera in its day.
